This letter is in regards to Mr. Markham's favor, addressed to Mr. Pankin. Mr. Merrill askes Mr. Markhma to disregard his previous order about Scribner, Dodd, Mead & Co. and Doubleday, Page & Co. books. He tells him to treat them as he would any other publishers regarding reviews.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
